7-15-20 Meeting Notes

Individuals Present: Mr. G, Dell S, Aynna, Mr. Rich, Megan L, Sara N, Rachael G, Adam W, Krissy K

Agenda Items:

Fall school opening - updates

  • 7:30am-2:09pm school day

  • A/B shifts will be decided centrally (rather than by the school)

  • The days kids aren’t in school, they would be working on review activities online. It’s basically like two days of school work and three days of homework per week. Teachers are teaching all four days, so it limits their ability to check in with kids on their days home.

  • Other unions have to weigh into the plan still

  • Within the next few weeks, we’ll have a fair plan for Lea. Might do a town hall at that point.

  • If students opt for the virtual academy (which is district-wide rather than school-based), they have to commit for one full quarter, and they won’t lose their district transfer spot.

  • Room parents? (for administering a Zoom meeting) It’s worth asking the question but we’re not sure we can legally do that.

  • Could the off days for kids be times when school partners do a lot of programming?

  • UACS has been running a cyber camp and learning some best practices. Artia has learned a lot - designating one person as tech, one person to monitor the chat, one person monitoring.

  • For the majority of partners, we will only allow them to do remote learning. A lot of them can do it and we’re all learning to do online learning better.

  • At the same time, a lot of our partners are also facing a lot of challenge.

  • What does online volunteering look like now?? People may have some more availability to tutor remotely during days when kids are home. What is the policy?

  • Maintaining community is something we have to figure out.

  • L-Wing is going to be taken down this summer. They were waiting for something to be done on the electrical before they could start. The other group working is doing a full paint and plaster of the school. Ms. E’s office has been refurbished. They did asbestos checks and we’re all good there.

  • Room 201 and 202 need a air conditioners..!

  • Could we get fans for every room?

Supporting Lea families in need: Using HSA Paypal to accept donations and then purchasing Visa gift cards, which will be given to Mr. G and Mr. H to distribute to families in need - Who can do what?

  • Monitoring the Paypal account - monitor through HSA (Megan + Adam are looking at the paypal account and Mr. G, Mr. Rich, and Mr. H can all see the transaction sheet)

  • Reporting to contributors..? No need!

  • Let’s wait until the end of the week to decide on the denomination. Promotion is just ramping up at this point.

  • There are at least 15 families on the list at this point. We’ll make sure we get at least 15 cards and have a bunch extra for later use (at discretion of Mr. H etc.)

  • Megan and Adam will work on buying the cards and getting them to Mr. G and Mr. H

  • Who is finalizing the letter? What avenues are we blasting too? Assign someone to communicate to the PAS group that wanted to donate? What final steps need to happen to get the word out and start accepting donations?

Looking ahead to the fall:

  • School supply and PPE drive -- Mr. Gerwer will ask the building committee about what priorities will be

  • Most likely will need PPE

  • No kids will be able to share anything, so we will definitely need school supplies

  • Lea face masks and other creative face masks as fundraiser?

  • Kids are definitely going to lose masks, so we’ll need those. How can we make it fun?

  • Lea branded Laptop cases could still be a viable fundraising swag item

  • Updates on Lea “lawn/apartment window” signs and new Lea swag (laptop covers?): Let’s hold on the sign project for now given the current situation. We haven’t started looking into the laptop covers yet.

Coordinating student/family connections - we decided to table this until today’s meeting. What do we think now?

  • More pertinent question at this point: How do we keep connection with families that choose virtual vs. in-person instruction? Let’s talk about this next time.

HSA recruitment/involvement

  • We have this conversation each year, but an important question to keep coming back to, how do we invite/recruit/make a more welcoming space for all families to be involved?

  • Molly has a resource about parent/family involvement - Adam will find it and share it

  • Rich has some PD info that he can pass along.

  • PD teams are reaching out to some families that aren’t usually on SAC or HSA - could potentially be an opportunity for connection

Next Meeting: Wednesday, August 5 at 7pm
