Updates from Mr. G
Uptick in COVID cases with everyone moving indoors because of the colder weather. We’ve had to quarantine a few classes. Trying to make it as low-impact as possible, but it’s still hard.
District just started their own COVID tracing group, but it may potentially be confusing to families in the meantime. Mr. G and Nurse H will continue to do contact tracing alongside that new group.
Vaccine is now available for 5-11 yo. Rich is working on setting up a clinic at Lea. There’s one at West Philly High this weekend. Spread the word to get kids vaccinated! If kids are vaccinated, they don’t need to be quarantined if they are considered a close contact of a COVID-positive case.
Might be helpful for Nurse H to send home a new half-sheet to clarify the process for what to do if our kids get sick.
Started a Positive Social Media team with 15 eighth graders. Working on a student-created website and videos for each grade. Mr. M is working with the group. It will be on the school website once they get it up and running.
Report card conferences are coming up -- planning for a few virtual days and one in-person day. Still working on the details - hope to share details by the middle of next week.
Student Council Elections are coming up after Thanksgiving.
Still need a school-wide incentive for November for PBIS. If anyone has ideas, let Mr. Gerwer know!
Would it be possible to do a collective incentive? Has been done in the past
Teacher-led clubs will be launching soon. Still nailing down details. Will try to have clubs available in the morning and afternoon. We have a lot of money for afterschool teachers to lead clubs this year. Ideas for clubs?
Robotics, chess, Lego, dance, cooking, jump roping / double dutch, soccer, gardening (https://www.phillyorchards.org/resources/)
Could we do a double dutch Saturday event?
Talked with FACE Liaison about family volunteers. Mr. B and Mr. Rich will be doing an in-person and a virtual volunteer training on November 22nd and 23rd. Contact Mr. Rich and Mr. B if you’re interested. If you did the training within the last few years, no need to do it again. Clearances are due every 5 years.
Christ Community Church is donating 75 turkeys and gift cards to Lea families.
Walnut Hill Community Association is doing a turkey giveaway. Info is on Dojo.
Financial Report
Total available: $4774.37 ($2500 is available outside of the picnic tables)
Funding Fun: $1,811.33
Scholastic dollars: $4,405.75
Plan to use toward free books for kids at the book fair (500 kids)
Online fundraiser updates
Picnic benches (~$2200) - holding off on ordering
Gave cash to classroom teachers ($50 each)
Health and Safety Supply Drive updates
Masks, hand sanitizer and Lysol wipes available to teachers in the auditorium
This was super well-received by staff. Let’s plan on doing this again after winter break. Donations from local businesses? Plan to add Kleenex next time
Playground
Gardening group meeting up - Nov. 20 at 9am (until ~10am)
Shed installation updates - planning to pour concrete this weekend
Once the shed is installed, we’ll have lots of gardening gear for kids on site. Maybe we could do a gardening club? Or classes could use it? Philadelphia Orchard Project has curriculum (www.phillyorchards.org/resources)
Bench updates - need to install concrete pad (or just get chairs in the existing pads)
Book Fair: November 22 - 24 - 10:30-3:30
Remaining volunteer slots needed - we’re pretty good on volunteers; just need to make sure everyone gets clearances in before the fair
Bakers - good on bakers
Promotion
Need to announce on Dojo
Rachael will get flyers out to teacher mailboxes by Friday this week (and vouchers later -- vouchers will be good for one free book per student)
Rachael will send “press pack” (graphics, etc) to Steph, Mr. G, and Mr. R for promotion.
For Spring: GCCA and WHCA want to be as helpful as possible to the school, so they might be good sources of funding for book scholarships in the spring. Could we do a “per class” cost as a fundraising goal? Roughly $10 per kid.
Chipotle fundraiser night: Dec. 1 from 4-8pm
40th & Walnut (on Penn’s campus) - need to show flyer or use code online
Can we share flyers with students through teachers?
Encourage folks to share on social media!
